Cisneros at UC Riverside in April, Riverside Press-Enterprise excerpt

RIVERSIDE: Noted Latina author at UC Riverside

Sandra Cisneros, one of the nation’s best-known Latino or Latina writers, will appear at UC Riverside April 25 as part of the 24th annual Tomás Rivera Conference.

Cisneros is the author of children’s books, poetry collections and novels, including The House on Mango Street, her 1984 book on a girl coming of age in a poor Latino neighborhood in Chicago that has sold more than 2 million copies and is used in many middle school, high school and university classrooms.

The Tomás Rivera conference highlights Mexican-American and Latino contributions to education and the arts. It also honors its namesake, who rose from a migrant worker to, in 1979, chancellor of UC Riverside, the first Latino chancellor in the UC system. Rivera died in 1984.

This year’s event will also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of UCR’s Chicano Student Programs.
