YA Dystopian Novel Wins Award

Moira Young Wins U.K.’s Costa Book Award for Children

Moira Young, a Canadian-born writer, has won the U.K.’s Costa Book Award for Children with her debut novel, Blood Red Road. As one of the five category winners, she now qualifies for consideration in the Costa Book of the Year Award.

For those who don’t know, Young is originally from New Westminster, B.C., but it wasn’t until she took up residence in Bath, England that she penned the best young adult dystopian novel I read in 2011. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Blood Red Road is an action-packed novel that both male and female teen readers, as well as adults who love YA, will not be able to put down. It follows 18-year-old Saba, a girl for which her fraternal twin, Lugh, is everything, and when men on horseback come to take him away, she promises to stop at nothing to find him.
